We lost Jackson “Butch” Guice at 63 this week. There are some nice remembrances of Butch in various places — here’s one, and here’s another; plus this one with various posts from other comic creators.
I loved Butch’s stuff for decades—his characters always had real weight to them; they filled panels in impressive ways without ever feeling crowded. And whether he was doing his early Michael Golden-esque style or the more photo-realistic style he evolved over the years, I was a massive fan of what he did.
I only had a couple opportunities to work with him, on the Amber Blake graphic novels that IDW imported; and on the William Gibson graphic novel, Archangel. Butch was also a front-runner for Francis Coppola’s Megalopolis graphic novel, too.
But the modern stuff isn’t what remains lodged in my head; it’s all of this work below; all of this and so much more. Thanks for such wonderful memories, Butch.

He and I chatted every so often. A super talented guy. Not too many in the industry who could hold their own next to him. He will be missed. But his work will inspire for all time.
Yeah, this was tough to hear about. Was glad for the opportunity to commission him for a couple of covers at AWA, and he was excited for the chance to do something on a potential future project for us as well. A quite humble and extremely talented man…
